Ash Selector presents The Groove Control Show. A musical massage with soul, boogie, funk, jazz classics, future R’n’B and soulful funky house stompers.
Q1. What first attracted you to Soul Music, is this relevant today?
I just loved the sound, and started buying soul 7-inch records when I was eight years old. Once soul music is in your system, it never leaves you , I’m a music junkie looking for my next fix! By that I mean I’m always looking for new artists making quality soul music today. When you find them you’re on a musical high!
Q2. What are your top 5 favourite soul tracks?
I really couldn’t narrow it down, too many to choose from, but they include:
Special Lady – Second Image
There’s a Reason – Hi-Tension
Overdose of Joy – Eugene Record
Bring the Family Back – Billy Paul
Make My Dreams A Reality – GQ
Q3. What are your favourite three record labels?

Q6. What radio experience did you have before you joined Solar?
I worked at various pirates including Girls FM and Skyline, then Choice FM
Q7. What is/are your main criteria in choosing records for airplay?
Firstly the groove, with a quality vocal and production.
Q8. Why would you recommend Solar to a listener?
The station has a history of supporting soul music to which it has always stayed true. I listened to Solar myself in my younger days and it’s all still here! All DJs are given free rein on their shows and there is no playlisting, allowing the DJ to display their personal passion for music.
Q9. Which other DJs do you admire and why?
DJ Spen for his mixing skills and imagination, Greg Edwards and Robbie Vincent for the radio shows I listened to as a youngster.
Q10. How would you like to be remembered by a listener?
With a smile, because music makes me happy, and I hope the music I play brightens their day.
Q11. What do you do to relax?
Believe it or not, I watch soaps on TV or take my two dogs out.
