Wednesday 12 - 2am
Andy Edwards’ Top Drawer, is music out of my top drawer, there will be a mix of rare groove, jazz funk, soul, some absolute gems and a few curve balls thrown in for good measure.
Without music, life would be a mistake
1. What attracted you to soul music in the first place, and does this still apply today?
Growing up, I always remember my parents playing the likes of Lou Rawls, Barry White, The Fatback Band and Diana Ross to name a few. My love of soul music grew from there and has flourished into what it is today
2. What are your top five favourite soul tracks?
This is a really hard question to answer, there are so many.
Ujima – I’m not ready
Curtis Mayfield – The makings of you
Leroy Hutson – All because of you
The Natural Four – Let’s try love again
Blue Magic – Look me up
2. What are your favourite three record labels
That is a lot easier Curtom, Buddah and ATCO
3. Who are your favourite five artists
Again this is never easy
The Natural Four
4. What are your top three soul clubs of all time?
Growing up on the south coast, we were not blessed with very good clubs. There were a group of us that would go to wine bars to see our friends DJ at weekends. One place we frequented was Scandals wine bar in Southsea
5. What radio experience did you have before you joined Solar
I have had no previous experience and the reason I am in this fantastic position is from answering a post on social media from the late great Les Adams. We spoke, met up, was told I had a great face for radio and as they say the rest is history! Les trained me to become a radio presenter and I will never forget what he installed in me.
6. What is/are your main criteria in choosing records for airplay
Life is an education and everyday is a school day. Music is the same, I love to play music that some listeners may or may not have heard before. I am the same, love hearing music I’ve not heard
7. Why would you recommend Solar to a listener
The beauty of Solar is that everyone is so passionate about their music. There are no agendas or playlists you have to play every hour on the hour and every DJ is an individual playing their music
8. Which other DJs do you admire and why
I have never met such a fantastic group of guys, I am not going to embarrass anyone by naming them, but the support, guidance and help I have received is unbelievable and I am very humbled by their friendship, as they say it is a family. The one person I cannot thank enough and admire the most was Les Adams, I have never met anyone with the patience, knowledge and guidance like him. He was truly an inspirational man and will never be forgotten. I would love for his legacy to continue with me
9. How would you like to be remembered by a listener
That guy who plays the fantastic music
10. What do you do to relax
I play golf (badly), listening to music, travelling adventures with my partner Karen and socialising with friends and family
