“Man discovered soul music as the answer to a desire for a higher emotional expression” ~ DJ Soulswede
DJ Soulswede is a Swedish music journalist and founder of Soulinterviews.com, who got his love for music from his father, who was a church organist and choir director. In his in-depth interviews he focuses on the flow of the interview, rather than on specific questions. He knows how to ask the questions that his listeners want the answers to, the questions that will give them insight into their favorite musicians.
His shows are a combination of audio interviews with his musical guests, and showcasing their music. In this manner, listeners get a complete picture of the musician being interviewed.
Throughout the years DJ Soulswede has interviewed a wide spectrum of musicians, from international icons to those that are up and coming, including Chaka Khan, James Mtume, Dionne Warwick, Angie Stone, Bootsy Collins, Lisa Stansfield, Teena Marie, Angie Stone, Mint Condition and dance music legends such as Marshall Jefferson, Josh Milan, Larry Heard, Byron Stingily, Juan Atkins and Miguel Migs. Plus hundreds of more interviews.
What attracted you to soul music in the first place, and does this still apply today?
Soul Music caught my attention as a young boy and I’m pleased to say it still does today. It’s the melodic sound combined with a sensitive and expressive voice. Soul music is all about credibility and the ability to deliver your inner feelings to another person without a filter.
What are your top five favourite soul tracks?
Gary Taylor – Love You To The Limit (Compassion, 1988)
James Mtume – Prime Time (You, Me and He, 1984)
Alexander O’Neal – A Broken Heart Can Mend (Alexander O’Neal, 1985)
Atlantic Starr – Don’t Take Me For Granted (All In The Name Of Love, 1987)
Bobby Womack – Through The Eyes Of A Child (Poet II, 1984)
There are of course many many more….
What are your favourite three record labels?
It’s countdown for the record label. The future will be all about distributors and promoters. I used to admire Philadelphia International, Flyte Tyme Records and DJ International (legendary house music label).
Who are your favourite five artists?
Maze feat. Frankie Beverly
And newer acts such as KING and many more…
What are your top three soul clubs of all time?
I don’t go clubbing.
What radio experience did you have before you joined Solar?
As a teenager I did regional radio shows in Sweden called Soul Power and Soul Food. I also did some freelance work (interviews) for The Swedish National Radio. I was also part of a German internet station for a while and in 2008 I launched my brainchild Soulinterviews.com – The Home of Soul Interviews.
What is/are your main criteria in choosing records for airplay?
I don’t care about the name of the artist, I just go with a feeling. The track must contain a strong melody though! Music should be felt – not analyzed.
Why would you recommend Solar to a listener?
The music on Solar is programmed by humans and not by money.
Which other DJs do you admire and why?
I admire all humble and passionate DJs. There would be no DJs without the artists.
How would you like to be remembered by a listener?
The guy with the strange accent and huge knowledge of music maybe… 🙂
What do you do to relax?
To relax I go jogging regularly and I try to meditate.
