Soulful Garage & House on Saturday Mornings at 4am on Solar Radio.
Q1. What first attracted you to Soul Music, is this relevant today?
The raw intensity of the music emanating from the States that I heard sporadically in the early 70s via older friends such as Bob Jones and championed, of course, by the likes of Dave Godin. Somewhat sadly, I feel – that in regard traditional Soul and Funk at least – this was the “golden era” and other, mutated forms of the genre give me the buzz these days.
Q2. What are your top 5 favourite soul tracks?
Changes every time I dip the collection but Grover Washington Jnr’s “Mr Magic” would definitely be one groove I couldn’t exist without.
Q3. What are your favourite three record labels?
Q4. Who are your favourite five artists?
Another ridiculously impossible question but these would definitely be contenders:
Earth Wind & Fire
Sade, Michael Jackson, etc. etc. etc.
Q5. What are your top three soul clubs of all time?
The Red Eye
The original MoS
Q6. What radio experience did you have before you joined Solar?
A brief stint on the pirate version of Kiss plus some short-lived others whose names I’ve forgotten, Stomp FM, Active FM.
Q7. What is/are your main criteria in choosing records for airplay?
Having an emotive quality be it a traditional Soul vocal delivery or a braincell-frying hypnotic synth riff!
Q8. Why would you recommend Solar to a listener?
The experience of the majority of the presenters in each given field coupled with the obvious diversity of shows.
Q9. Which other DJs do you admire and why?
Bob Jones – used to go see Bob at DJs in Chelmsford about 35 years ago and remain friends to this day. His knowledge and collection of black music is absolutely amazing.
Froggy – another huge influence on me, in particular because of the whole mixing thing
Danny Rampling – like me, he goes across the board musically … if its good and gets you off, then drop it!
Q10. How would you like to be remembered by a listener?
As someone they owe money to and will be settling up later today!
Q11. What do you do to relax?
