3rd Monday of the month 3 - 6pm
What attracted you to soul music in the first place, and does this still apply today?
Ma & Pa where a big influence growing up. They would play records on the “Radiogram” from The Inkspots, The Platters & lots of Motown artists like The Supremes. My turning point though, was watching Saturday Night Fever in 1976. Tavares – More than a Woman was the “eureka moment”, I decided then & there, that was the music for me. Also John Travolta was sooooo cool! An image I still strive towards today 🙂
What are your top five favourite soul tracks?
In no particular order:
Collins & Collins – Top of the Stairs
Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons – Swearin’ to God
Donny Hathaway – Memory of our Love
Maze – Reasons
Paris – I Choose You
What are your favourite three record labels?
Who are your favourite five artists?
From back in the day, would have to be
Maze & Frankie Beverley, Donny Hathaway, Willie Hutch, Gladys Knight & Bobby Womack, more recently though, Bluey & Incognito, Tony Momrelle (Best live vocalist we’ve got!), Shaun Escoffrey (just, awesome!), Gregory Porter (nuff said!) & Samuel D Sanders (Watch this space!)
What are your top three soul clubs of all time?
The Lacy Lady @ The Goldmine
Sunday Soul Affair @ The Blue Note
Club 8090 @ Corks
What radio experience did you have before you joined Solar?
Started in Hospital Radio curtesy of my Mum (who used to work in one), in the late 70’s.
Radio Canarias in Gran Canaria.
Metro Radio Traffic & Travel
Active FM which became Soul City 107.5 in Essex.
Solar Radio (late 1990’s)
What is/are your main criteria in choosing records for airplay?
Just has to be soulful. It’s great if it’s something I’ve never heard before, be that new or old, but generally, “It moves my soul!”
Why would you recommend Solar to a listener?
If you like soul music, in whatever guise, there is NO other radio station in the world that supplies it the way Solar Radio does. Their presenters are some of the most knowledgable, passionate & approachable people I have ever met & Solar’s “free range” mix of Classic & 21st Century Soul, does exactly what it says on the tin!
“What’s not to like?”
Which other DJs do you admire and why?
(Innovator & he started all this for me).
(Innovator, Role model for me & Genius)
(Innovator, influential & hardest working man in show-business)
(Innovator- First guy I heard play soul music on the radio)
How would you like to be remembered by a listener?
Wow! What question!
I’ve kinda never thought that it was “all about me”, but “all about the music”. Soul music is beautiful & I want as many people as possible to see that & hear it.
I know I’m not the best radio presenter in the world, and I’ve never really pushed myself to be “the star” of any show, I like to think the music is?
If I’ve played some great music, not offended anyone & occasionally made someone chuckle, that’s good enough for me, but if push comes to shove, “That fella who played some pretty decent choonz”. That’ll do!
What do you do to relax?
Search for good music, collect & play guitars (badly!) & play golf. (Although the golf can be anything but relaxing at times! 🙁
