Solar Sunrise

What attracted you to soul music in the first place, and does this still apply today?

I went to a local disco in St Peter’s church hall in Brockley South East London, I was aged 14 & there was this DJ called the Cockney Rebel playing exciting music which I later found out was called soul music! I was hooked for life!

What are your top 5 favourite soul tracks?

Brass Construction – Changing
Kleer – Open your mind
Candido – Dancing & Prancing
GQ – Disco Nights
Juggy Murray Jones – Inside America (parts 1&2)

What are your favourite 3 record labels?

What are your favourite 5 artists?

Barry White
Ashford & Simpson
Roy Ayers
Leroy Burges

What are your top 3 soul clubs of all time?

Royalty South Gate North London (Great atmosphere! With the late Froggy & Guest DJ’S)
Global Village Charing Cross London (3 floors of great music plus a record shop too!)
Jaspers South End Lane Catford South East London (The music & dancing was electric!)

What radio experience did you have before you joined solar?

I have over 25 years’ experience in radio, started off with London pirate radios like JWT (Stood for Just Wicked Tunes, Don’t Laugh!) Joy Radio & T.K.O Radio (Total Knock Out). I then crossed over to legal FM Radio, worked for over 10 years on RTM Radio/Millennium Radio for London Kent & Essex, also FLR radio for south London. Apart from making the tea! I hosted Breakfast & Drive Time programmes, where I worked with the likes of Old Skool Man, Clive R & Tony Monson!

What is/are your main criteria in choosing records for airplay?

If it moves me! That’s all the inspiration I need!

Why would you recommend solar to a listener?

You won’t hear the same predictable dry playlist! Solar Jocks play music with a passion that will keep you coming back for more!

Which other DJs do you admire and why?

Apart from the Obvious! John Sachs (Early Capital Radio, very entertaining, great voice!). Simon Bates great presentation (Our Tunes Legendary!). The late Froggy for the mixing, (the wall of sound or monster roadshow) the best sound system ever! His love for soul/jazz funk, his energy & the shouts he used to give to the Erection Section at Caister Soul Weekenders of which I’m a proud original member who can still fit into a Section T shirt………In my dreams!

How would you like to be remembered by a listener?

“That happy, smiley voice on radio who plays great tunes!”

What do you do to relax?
