What attracted you to soul music in the first place, and does this still apply today?
My Dad was a huge music fan, so our house
was always playing an album. My earliest memory
of soul music was hearing Earth, Wind & Fire,
The Isley Brothers and Stevie Wonder. Lucky really, had I been into football Dad would not have been so supportive! Whilst I still prefer the older tracks, I think the standard of new soul is very high.
What are your top five favourite soul tracks?
Such a hard question! Hmmm, in no particular order, Michael Wycoff – Loooking Up To You, Stevie Wonder – Ribbon In The Sky, Quincy Jones – The Secret Garden, Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell – California Soul, Eric Benet & Faith Evans – Georgie Porgie
What are your favourite three record labels?
Motown, Qwest, Salsoul
Who are your favourite five artists?
Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, George Benson, Al Jarreau, Marvin Gaye – but there are so many!
What are your top three soul clubs of all time?
I was too young to go clubbing, when soul clubs were in their prime, but whilst still at school I worked at The Rio in Didcot, alongside Robbie Vincent, Chris Hill and Steve Walsh, which was a real privilege.
What radio experience did you have before you joined Solar?
Jack FM/FM1079 Oxford, Radio Woking, Zero Radio, oh and Radio 210 in Reading – behind the scenes!
What is/are your main criteria in choosing records for airplay?
The song should remind you of a happy time, or in the case of new release has to have great production and the potential to make our loyal listeners want to hear it again…
Why would you recommend Solar to a listener?
Dedicated and passionate presenters that love what they do, are knowledgeable, entertain, but ultimately know it is all about the music.
Which other DJs do you admire and why?
For technical mixing ability, and a unrivalled passion (there is that word again) for excellence, my friend Les Adams, without whom, I would not be writing this bio! Robbie Vincent – The Sound Of Sunday Night – need I say more? Jeff Young, as his Big Beat show was ahead of it’s time, and Tony Blackburn, who reallyloves soul, and is a real gent to boot.
How would you like to be remembered by a listener?
An entertaining listen, where the music rules
What do you do to relax?
Listen to music, whilst drinking wine!
