davegDave Gregory had an enviable pedigree in musical knowledge and appreciation and radio broadcasting, with a career into its fifth decade when he tragically lost his battle with cancer on the morning of Tuesday November 22 aged 67.

To quote from Dave’s profile on the Solar Radio website, where his regular monthly 'Gregamix' show was broadcast, “I first fell in love with the sound of Black American music at school in the 1960’s, thanks to singles from the likes of the Ronettes, Ray Charles, Mary Wells, the Markeys, Supremes, Four Tops, Junior Walker, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Booker T and so on. Put it this way, I was nearly always out of pocket money in those days! Later when I started out as a club DJ circa 1968, everybody was getting down to James Brown, so I had to invest accordingly, and eventually grew to appreciate a lot of the material that I got really tired of being repeatedly asked to play at the time….like an 11 minute version of ‘Mother Popcorn’!”

Dave’s radio career is comparable with an A-Z of British broadcasting – to quote again from the Solar profile,  in more or less chronological order from 1970 – 1997, this comprised  Offshore Pirate station Radio Noordsee International (RNI) UBN, BBC Radio 1,- "Most notably starting March 19th 1972 I was given the daunting task (for someone so young and inexperienced) of hosting Tony Blackburn's Breakfast Show while he was busy getting hitched - and honeymooning his first wife, actress Tessa Wyatt ! ",  BBC Radio London and BFBS.

1973 found him at ILR in Newcastle -upon - Tyne's Metro Radio, the start of seven years in the North of England; Tyneside, Teeside and lastly Yorkshire. With the launch of IBA's  Essex Radio in 1981, Dave began a radical series of Soul and Dance shows. Broadcast originally from the studio and later live from popular venues, they reflected Essex and East London's appetite for funk music. The shows continued for most of the decade, but with a change in UK Radio style, Dave left Essex Radio and, following some work at London's popular urban pirate stations, became a record label promoter for a short while. He also worked at Radio Luxembourg, Invicta Gold, Chiltern Supergold, Choice FM, Jazz FM and LBC. Since 1997, apart from his stints on Solar, he had been an independent radio creative and voice over artist, as has been the main voice for Solar's station I.D's and jingles since the station relaunched in 1998.

Asked about his influences, Dave cited  “Brian Matthew – for his voice, presentation and both endearing and enduring enthusiasm for everything he does on the radio;  and for being synonymous with the best of 60’s pop (both then and now).  Tony Blackburn – probably my biggest inspiration and influence when I started in radio, there’s no denying his professionalism, not to mention his love of radio and Motown.  Johnnie Walker, for his relaxed, personable style and musical integrity, and Steve Wright for sheer easy listening and good entertainment value.

Dave said that he hoped to be remembered by listeners “Hopefully for making them smile and brightening their day with some great alternative feel-good music”.  He would relax by “Crashing in front of the TV for a good drama, movie or documentary; pottering with my car, or taking a drive or ramble in the countryside. I love food as well…probably a bit too much for my own good!”

Dave’s friend and colleague Chris Grant wrote this message :

“It is with deep regret that I have to inform you of the death of Dave Gregory, he passed away peacefully in the arms of his Lady love, Sue, with her family in attendance this morning. In the last few months of his life he bravely fought off a very aggressive lung cancer, but sadly in the end, it overwhelmed him.

“As a broadcaster and much loved close friend, I will miss him greatly, as indeed will all of his fellow broadcasters. He was a consummate professional, a fine presenter, and a respected voice artist, his knowledge of soul music was encyclopaedic, as it was one of his great loves. He will be greatly missed by all of his colleges at Solar Radio, and his regular listeners for the friendly and unique broadcaster that he was. A memorial and special tribute to him and his life, is being planned for a later date. From me, and from all of us who knew and admired him. R.I.P.”
