The Two Hour Takeover

Hi, My name is Neil Simson.

I started DJing many years ago, in fact more than i’d like to admit! I’ve been fortunate enough to work in some great venues over the years and with some great DJs, and played to crowds of 15,000 (what a massive buzz that was).

One of the best feeling’s for me is playing music I enjoy and am passionate about, to people who feel exactly the same as I do.

Thankfully I have been able to do this more often than not over the years. My musical taste’s vary from Motown to Classic Soul, Club Classics to Funky, Soulful House.

Please take a listen, I know you’ll love it!

Q1. What first attracted you to Soul Music, is this relevant today?

When my Dad was still alive, he was very much into Jazz. I grew up listening to Oscar Peterson, Herb Alpert, Nat King Cole etc. Once I was allowed to listen to the radio myself, I discovered more soulful tunes listening to the likes of Peter Young, Peter Powell/Froggy when they used to collaborate on Radio 1. I have been hooked ever since. Having been DJing for over 30 years, I’ve had to play popular dance genres in various clubs, but always come back to Soul.

Q2. What are your top 5 favourite soul tracks?

This is an impossible question, how can I choose just five!!
I’ll have a go, in no particular order:
Luther – A House Is Not A Home (and pretty much every track he ever did)
Marvin Gaye – Got To Give It Up.
AWB – Pick Up The Pieces
EWF – Star
George Benson – Turn Your Love Around

Q3. What are your favourite three record labels?

Philadelphia Records
S.O.L.A.R Records

Q4. Who are your favourite five artists?

Luther Vandross
George Benson
Marvin Gaye
Jean Carne

Q5. What are your top three soul clubs of all time?

Having pretty much always been working from the age of about 17, I didn’t get too many opportunities to visit other clubs. One I distinctly remember was Middlesex and Herts Country Club.
Ronnelles – Where I worked
Woodside Country Club – Where I worked.

Q6. What radio experience did you have before you joined Solar?

Very little radio experience apart from maybe the usual starting point of hospital radio.
Soul Groove Radio since Early 2012

Q7. What is/are your main criteria in choosing records for airplay?

Any tune you want to get up and dance to, makes you happy and makes you want to listen to, again and again.

Q8. Why would you recommend Solar to a listener?

Every DJ is passionate about the music they play. No play lists so you know the Particular DJ loves the music they are playing, this definitely comes across when you listen to the station.

Q9. Which other DJs do you admire and why?

Tony Blackburn
Robbie Vincent
Greg Edwards
Froggy and all the DJs who play quality music and are enthusiastic and passionate about what they do.

Q10. How would you like to be remembered by a listener?

As someone who made them smile, made them want to dance and bothered about what they were doing.

Q11. What do you do to relax?

Listen to music
Spend time with my family
Watch decent films, when I get The chance.
and obviously, I enjoy the odd beer!!
