PAUL NEWMAN – YOUR Saturday ‘SOUL PROVIDER’
Sponsored by BINKY WOMACK
Paul promises to kick-start your weekend with some interactive fun and exciting competitions. There’s the chance to help choose the set for a soul artist or group featured in a ‘Newman’s Nirvana’ dream concert, plus your recorded requests & dedications.
All that and loads of Classic & 21st Century Soul on Solar Radio, the perfect soundtrack to your Saturday morning.
Hard working, passionate about radio and living the dream! Seasoned mid-morning/breakfast presenter, previously heard on UK stations Capital Gold (South coast & Birmingham), Smooth 102.2 London, Southern FM, Chiltern 97.6, MIX96, FOX FM and more recently Newbury & Andover Sound. Offshore, Paul has recently broadcast from a lightship (think “The Boat That Rocked” and you’re on the money!)
Paul’s interest in soul music goes way back to when he was knee-high to a grasshopper when he literally fell in love with the Diana Ross song “I’m Still Waiting.” Later, as a teenager, his first vinyl purchases included the Detroit Spinners “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love”, Candi Staton’s “Young Hearts Run Free” and “Love’s Theme” by the Love Unlimited.
In the 1980’s, Paul was fortunate to be living in North London and quickly became a fan of the original formation of Solar Radio, as well as Horizon, Invicta, JFM, KISS and other soul pirates on FM (in between listening to Tony Blackburn, Andy Peebles and Robbie Vincent). Paul still draws upon the influence of this period in his shows today, as well as getting a tremendous thrill in helping promote the new music of today.
“Your Soul Provider”, Paul Newman promises a truly eclectic mix of soul, plus a cheeky bit of personality for anyone who cares to listen. One thing’s for certain: you’re guaranteed to hear the finest “Classic & 21st Century Soul.”

Q1. What first attracted you to Soul Music, is this relevant today?
I have always loved the feel-good factor that soul music naturally brings with it.
Being a musician myself (pianist) I especially love lush harmonious vocals and complex chord structures!
Q2. What are your top 5 favourite soul tracks?
Almost impossible! But Keni Burke – Rising To The Top, Gladys Knight – Taste Of Bitter Love, Luther Vandross – Going In Circles, Bobby Womack – Across 110th Street, Diana Ross – I’m Still Waiting (first soul record to send a shiver down my spine aged just 9)
Q3. What are your favourite three record labels?
Q4. Who are your favourite five artists?
Q5. What are your top three soul clubs of all time?
Camden Jazz Café
Dover Street Wine Bar
Hideaway in Streatham
Q6. What radio experience did you have before you joined Solar?
Capital, Smooth, Southern FM, Chiltern, FOX FM, 2CR, BRMB/XTRA, Newbury & Andover Sound, Radio Seagull (AM rock on a boat!)… and a few more.
Q7. What is/are your main criteria in choosing records for airplay?
I can tell just by flicking through the intro and the middle eight if I’m going to like it or not. I leave intuition to work its magic and the mix usually works out quite nicely! (IMHO)
Q8. Why would you recommend Solar to a listener?
Absofunkinlutely! I’m already on a mission to convert the uninitiated! It’s just such a cool listen…and presented by a great bunch of professionals who really know what they’re doing! (I’ll catch up sooner or later).
Q9. Which other DJs do you admire and why?
Roger Scott for leaving the faders alone when he spoke over the music. Greg Edwards and Robbie Vincent are truly legendary soul ambassadors as is Tony Blackburn.
Q10. How would you like to be remembered by a listener?
Just to be remembered… (for the right reasons! LOL). That is all.
Q11. What do you do to relax?
Me, relax? Are you kiddin? OK, well, a nice Spa would be a good start!
